Love for Africa
English poem by: Patricia FurstenbergTheme: Love
I read no books
but tracks in the dust
and twigs of the bush trails
and rivers though mud.
I listen to no music
but the cough of the leopard,
the roar of a lion,
and the barking of zebra.
I know the call of the go-away-bird,
the cry of the fish eagle,
the breathy noise of a rhino bull
that blends with the silvery stillness of dawn.
I carry the sign of the acacia,
I feast on the succulent berries,
stray from the poisonous ones,
and walk till my skin turns the colour of mud.
I glimpse at the immortality of Africa
and fill my eyes with its charm.
