Given a Second Chance
English poem by: Patricia FurstenbergTheme: New beginnings
Be a leaf, humble on earth, I command my eye.
Obedient, he conforms, resting on cold dirt
yet my mind drifts, anchored still
to the canopy above, to the world’s vast sprawl.
He stirs, a rustling voice – or is it a shout? –
“I’m watching! I’m watching!” Revengeful.
“What?” I plead his return
craving clarity, the secrets he spies.
He listens, and I sense a wink,
Crafty and bright.
Be a fish, I’ll give you an endless kingdom –
I offer this plea to my eye catching a tear,
bridge to depths that sparkle, vast.
He listens. Eager dives homeward, swims like a fish
I’m dizzy – the ocean heeds no call –
and my eye, revengeful, answers. Or is it the echo?
“I see, I see, I see.” The waves murmur back
I beckon him to return to the cradle of my arms;
he complies, glistening,
a bright secret, moist and wise.
Be a star, keep hidden the vastness above
as all parents have done, at least once.
My eye laughs, feigning heed, my arm rises to guide his faith.
He slips down, nestling into the earth instead.
I hear leaves rustling, waves murmuring, and then – clarity,
sprouting in the depths of my mind, rooted in earth,
passing droplets locked beneath, beyond dry leaves cradling its heart.
“Look, look!” he commands. I bow, as humble as a leaf,
listening to the waves rising through earth, within me,
and I am given a second chance.
